Crest of the Peacock

 Hi everyone,

Figure 1.1 makes me really surprised. It shows me how mathematics developed over the ages. Greece à Discovery of Greek learning à Europe and her culture dependences. In the past, I think that the math history from Greek but it not true. It came from Egypt and Mesopotamia. This diagram shows that there is a transportation from Greek to Europe.

I am so surprised about Baghdad, Iraq. This is the first time I hear that math history involves to Iraq. House of Wisdom was built in Baghdad with a large library for manuscripts that had been collected from virous sources. (p.11)

“In both Egypt and Mesopotamia there existed well-developed written number systems as early as the third millennium BC. The peculiar character of the Egyptian hieroglyphic numerals led to the creation of special types of algorithms for basic arithmetic operation” (George, 13). This sentence helps me to understand the history of algorithm

After reading this article, I understand the relationship between math history between China and India before Buddhism was spread into China. The solution of indeterminate equations, using the method of kuttaka in India and of qiuyishu in China, was an abiding passion in both countries (George,19).

  1. Jessica, Thank you for sharing your thoughts on George Joseph's chapter. During the Islamic Golden Age, there was an incredibly rich development and exchange of mathematics in the present day Middle East. We will be looking at ancient Egyptian mathematics next.
